Occupational Health & Safety
SBS Australia has embarked on achieving a level of Occupational Health and Safety that will enable the company to not only to meet our legal and moral responsibilities but become an employer of choice.
SBS Australia applied to Workcover South Australia to join the Safety Achiever Bonus System (SABS) 1st March 2004 .
This system aims to encourage a business management systems approach to the management of occupational health, safety and welfare and injury management.
The performance standards promoted by SABS are consistent with the Australian / New Zealand Standard 4804.
The standard we have achieved is based on a proven continuous improvement model incorporating five performance standards to ensure world's best OHS&W practice.
Commitment and policy: management and worker commitment to ensure success.
Planning: effective planning to define measurable outcomes.
Implementation : appropriate resources and capabilities available.
Measurement and evaluation: performance measured, monitored and evaluated.
Management systems review and improvement: to ensure continuous improvement.
The continuous improvement management model clearly designates overall responsibility for OHS&W, rehabilitation and claims administration to senior management of the organisation.
The performance standards do not replace legislative requirements or relieve our organisation of the responsibility of complying with the South Australian Occupational Health Safety & Welfare Act 1985, Consolidated Regulations 1995, Approved Codes of Practice and Australian Standards (called up in the regulations).
Workcover SA conducted an on-site SABS validation audit June 18 th 2004 to ensure compliance. The result was a major achievement justifying the appointment of a fulltime OHS&W Manager. Our commitment towards success was commended by our auditor given the time frame of only four months from conception to Level 1 being achieved.
A comprehensive OHS&W Plan and a Safety Handbook have been developed - the nucleus of our long term strategies are underpinned by our OHS&W Policy.
The companies' long term goals are focussed on the principle of " aim for nothing short off zero tolerance towards hazards, incidents and accidents"
To reinforce our commitment we have adopted the "SAFER STATEMENT"
